Tips For Taking Care Of Your Landscaping

Whether you are throwing a barbecue or sitting on the front porch, summer is best spent outdoors. Don't spoil the view by staring at dead, dying or overgrown plants.

Your home landscape requires constant care. Professional landscape companies are trained to provide the routine maintenance your home gardens need.

Yet, there are several tasks you can do yourself. Perform these five tips to keep your landscapes looking their best all season long.

  • Prune regularly. Plants grow. But, plants can often become too large. Trees and shrubs must be trimmed. This maintains their desired look and prevents crowding out other plants. The best time to trim is late fall since this begins the dormant season for most plants. This fosters even better growth for the upcoming spring.
  • Eliminate weeds. Not all growth is good. Weeds steal much-needed resources from plants. Barrier fabric may slow weeds down, but their presence is inevitable. You can pull weeds, but they will grow back quickly if you don't get all their roots. For this reason, weed killer spray is most effective.
  • Prepare soil. Treating your landscape starts from the ground up. Adding compost can help replenish key nutrients. Mulching areas again can reduce water loss and regulate soil temperature. A professional landscape company can even check your soil and recommend products to help restore its pH balance.
  • Water appropriately. Quality watering is more important than quantity, especially during the summer. If flowers begin to wilt, they either have too little or too much water. Place a hose and let the water trickle slowly at the plant's base to ensure the roots are hydrated deeply. Early mornings or late evenings are ideal for watering.

Remove or replace. No matter how well you tend your landscape, some plants just don't make it. Remove or replace dead trees and shrubs immediately before they infect others. However, some removals require help. If you're looking for a hardscape contractor or a landscape contractor, contact Landscape Designers Michigan today!
